Quartersawn Red Oak has straight, flaked grain with a coarse texture. The color variations of Quartersawn Red Oak are similar to Red Oak. The heartwood of our Quartersawn Red Oak Plank Style Countertops varies from tan to pink with reddish tones, while the sapwood is white to light brown.
Quartersawn Red Oak Plank Countertops are constructed by gluing Quartersawn Red Oak wood boards side by side. The wood boards run the length of the countertop and are random widths between 3" and 6". The first and last wood boards of our Quartersawn Red Oak Plank Style Countertops may be less than 3" wide. Our wood plank style countertops are face grain providing a traditional look that has always been popular. Although our Quartersawn Red Oak Plank Style Countertops can be used for light food preparation when treated with a food safe mineral oil, they should not be used for cutting or chopping.

Finishing Choices
If your plank countertop will not be used for any food preparation, conversion varnish is the recommended choice.
Unfinished: All plank countertops must be sealed and finished. There are a variety of finishes on the market. Use a food grade mineral oil if you will be preparing food on your plank countertop. Otherwise, use a longer lasting finish such as a polyurethane. Follow the finish manufacturer's instructions. You can also stain, then finish, your plank countertop. Many stains are not food safe.
Conversion Varnish: We apply three coats of our 45 sheen, catalyzed, commercial grade conversion varnish to the top surface. Two coats are applied everywhere else, including underneath. Our conversion varnish contains acrylic for extra durability. The result is a semi-gloss finish that looks spectacular! This is not appropriate if the plank countertop may be used for food preparation.
Mineral Oil: We apply two coats of food grade mineral oil to all areas, including underneath. When you receive your plank countertop, you should apply one coat per day for a week to the top surface, sides, edges and any exposed areas underneath. After the seven coats, you should apply one coat per month to these same areas. This is appropriate if the plank countertop may be used for food preparation.
Why choose Quartersawn Red Oak for wide plank countertops?
Quartersawn Red Oak is known for its stability and beautiful quartersawn grain with some medullary rays and flecking. Quartersawn Red Oak wide plank countertops are less prone to warping compared to their plain sawn counterparts. The noticeable grain figure gives each plank countertop a distinct look that fits well in both classic and modern kitchens.
Are Quartersawn Red Oak wide plank countertops durable?
Yes, Quartersawn Red Oak is strong and well suited for many uses. Quartersawn cut wood is less prone to warping and movement, so the wide plank countertops are more likely to stay stable over time. The hardness of Quartersawn Red Oak provides good resistance to wear and allows the surface to handle everyday use.
What does Quartersawn Red Oak look like in wide plank countertops?
Quartersawn Red Oak has a warm reddish-brown color with lighter undertones, and its medullary rays are visible in areas of the grain, giving the wide plank countertop a very distinctive look. The grain is straighter than plain sawn oak, which results in a cleaner, more uniform appearance while still showing natural variation and flecking.
What finish options are available for Quartersawn Red Oak wide plank countertops?
Finishing Quartersawn Red Oak helps highlight the grain and flecking in different ways. A food safe mineral oil creates a soft, natural look and is the correct choice if the countertop will be used for direct food preparation, though the finish does need to be reapplied occasionally. A conversion varnish gives the surface a harder seal and makes the medullary rays stand out more. Either choice helps protect the wide plank countertop while enhancing the warm tone of Red Oak.
